On The Job

Employee Benefits
It would seem that employee benefits are a thing of the past. There are a lot of companies that still have them, but some are slowly getting rid of them. There are others, like my husband's company, who want to keep them, but they are just not what they used to be. It would seem that more often not, you are not going to find a good job with employee benefits unless you are working for a very large company. Smaller business just can't afford it.

Drug Tests
Employee drug tests are on the rise and corporations make up their own rules regarding all types of testing related to pre-employment, random, and testing with reason or suspicion of use on the job. Employers can test future and present employees on any number of substances including but not limited to marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines or methamphetamines, opiates, and PCP. Expanded screening panels can also be requested that test for barbiturates (Phenobarbital), hydrocodone or propoxyphene (Vicodin or Darvon), Quaaludes, benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium), methadone, alcohol, or MDMA (Ecstasy). Pre-employment drug testing is required by many companies, which remains to be very controversial for many reasons including an individual's right to privacy.

Difficult People
Until things got hard at work, I had always considered myself good at handling difficult people. I knew just how to deal with difficult people, in fact. I was polite with them, I did not let them get under my skin, and I walked away. Dealing with difficult men when you can't walk away, however, is something else entirely, as I was soon to find out.

Corporate Social Responsibility
Corporate social responsibility has been one of the most problematic and troubling factors of business management since almost the very beginning of the corporation. Social responsibility corporate used to be a very simple thing, but it is no longer so. In the beginning, corporate charters were extremely simple. You would charter a corporation for one task, say, to build a bridge. That corporation would have the right to perform that one task and no further tasks. Back then, socially responsible corporations were the rule rather than the exception. Because they had such limited power, they would be forced to stay within the law.
